Hans von Spakovsky is a senior legal fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. He is an authority on civil rights, civil justice, the First Amendment, immigration and the rule of law and government reform. He is manager of Heritage’s Election Law Reform Initiative and writes about campaign finance restrictions, voter fraud and voter ID, enforcement of federal voting rights laws, administration of elections and voting equipment standards. He served two years as a member of the Federal Election Commission and also worked for the Justice Department. He is co-author of the book, ‘Who’s Counting?: How Fraudsters and Bureaucrats Put Your Vote at Risk’ and ‘Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department.’
Is voter fraud merely isolated incidences or is it massive? Hans said the problem isn’t massive but there is enough that it could make a difference in close elections. For example, in Minnesota in 2008, Al Franken was declared the Senate winner by 312 votes out of 2.9 million cast. We also know that about 1,100 felons voted illegally in that election. This year in Ohio, over a dozen local races were decided by one vote or a tie breaker. So make no mistake about it, your vote counts.
