Ron Rhodes is President of Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries, a teaching and resource ministry that specializes in defending Christianity against atheists, agnostics, skeptics, the cults, world religions and any group that teaches false doctrine. Ron is the author of more than 60 books, many of which focus on the topic of apologetics. One of his latest books, which is discussed on this program is called, ‘Conversations with Jehovah’s Witnesses’.
On numerous weekends there are large conventions in stadiums and complexes across America where Jehovah’s Witnesses gather. Ron indicated that these conventions have tremendous public relations value for the witnesses because when you get that many people together, witnesses in the local community get to see just how strong their organization is and it gives them confidence that they are the true people of God.
While in attendance there are sermons, dramas, appearances by missionaries and international delegates along with a presentation of the Lord’s Supper for the ‘anointed class’.
Appeals to attend such conferences can be deceiving to those outside the organization because Jehovah’s Witnesses may use a theme that appears biblical. Ron, however, pointed out that this is a tactic used by the witnesses as they utilize biblical terms familiar to many that have been redefined to mean something entirely different.
Ron explained that one of the keys to reaching Jehovah’s Witnesses is to ask strategic questions that make them really think about the things they’ve been taught.
For example, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God created all things including Jesus. They believe that Jesus is the archangel Michael. Ron responds by reading Isaiah 44:24 where God is speaking to his people, telling them that he created the universe alone by himself. Then he takes them to Colossians 1:16 and John 1:3, verses that tell us that Jesus created the universe. So the obvious question is this: If only God created the universe and if Jesus is also the creator of the universe, what does that say about Christ’s identity?
Ron also looks at the organization’s view of God, heaven, hell, the resurrection, one of their false prophecies as well as his latest book that gives the reader a chance to observe a real conversation with a Jehovah’s Witness.
