This Crosstalk focuses on a news item from the Press Secretary of the White House. It noted that on the occasion of Eid al Fitr (the Muslim completion of Ramadan), President Obama explained that, ‘…it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict and disease.’
The President continued by saying, ‘In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim-Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.’
What achievements and contributions was the President referring to? What Muslims were in attendance during the signing of the Declaration of Independence? How many were part of our Constitutional Convention? Did Muslims contribute to the fight to end slavery in America?
Other questions could be asked as well because these are just a few critical points that constitute the ‘fabric’ of our nation; moments in history that shaped the core of our democracy.
Find out how listeners responded to President Obama’s words when you review this Crosstalk broadcast.
