The conclave to elect the next pope to lead the Roman Catholic Church is set to begin tomorrow. At the same time there is talk of scandal within the church as well as debate over what type of pope should be elected.
Actually, before a person delves into those issues, one must ask about the doctrines and teachings of Catholicism to find out whether or not people are being led astray.
To answer that important question, Crosstalk brought in Mike Gendron. For over 30 years, Mike was a devout Roman Catholic and a strong defender of the “one true church.” He was taught from a very early age, to trust and rely on the church, its priests, the sacraments and his own good works for salvation. However in 1981 while attending an evangelical seminar, he realized the Bible is the supreme authority for knowing truth. Mike soon discovered that many of the teachings and traditions of the Catholic religion were not found in the Bible. After more study he discovered the Roman Catholic plan of salvation was diametrically opposed to the Gospel of grace that is revealed in the Bible. Mike left the Catholic Church in 1985 for a church where the true Gospel is proclaimed and the Scriptures are the final authority in all matters of faith. He leads a ministry called “Proclaiming the Gospel.”
Mike joined Jim Schneider to discuss numerous aspects of Catholicism including the following:
–What is a “conclave” and what takes place there?
–Why do Catholics believe their bishops are successors to the apostles?
—-Catholic officials talk about the influence of the Holy Spirit in relation to the decision making process for finding a new pope, but will the cardinals actually be using God’s Word to see who is qualified for the position?
–What are some of the contrasts between what Peter taught and what Catholicism taught through Pope Benedict?
The answers to these questions are just a sample of what you can learn and discuss with your Catholic friends and acquaintances.
