F. Michael Maloof is the former Senior Security Policy Analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has nearly 30 years of federal service both in the Defense Department and as a specialized trainer for border guards and Special Forces in Central Asia. He directed the Defense Department’s technology security operations as head of a ten-person team involved in halting diversion of military critical technologies to countries posing threats to national security and sponsoring terrorism. He has been a legislative assistant to various U.S. Senators, now serves as a senior staff writer for WND and is the author of the book, “A Nation Forsaken: EMP: The Escalating Threat of an American Catastrophe”.
According to Mr. Maloof, NASA has confirmed that if the U.S. was hit directly by a solar storm, it would cost upwards of 2 trillion dollars in the first year and would affect more than 160 million lives.
Why should a person be concerned about this? From the power grid to information systems to our financial and transportation systems and even personal health electronics such as hearing aids and pacemakers; America is particularly vulnerable because we rely so heavily on electronics to run our society.
There’s another element to this dilemma that must be considered. A solar storm is basically a natural form of what would take place if a rogue nation would attempt to stymie the United States by exploding a high altitude electromagnetic pulse bomb. Both of these examples constitute what is referred to as an EMP, a high energy burst of electromagnetic energy caused by rapid acceleration of charged particles. EMP’s are so powerful that they can completely knock out or destroy electronics/electrical systems.
In 1999 America took action and avoided large scale problems related to Y2K. Find out what can be done to avoid the potential problems that would be caused by a natural or man-made EMP event and how you can be part of the solution.
