Barbara Loe Fisher is the President and Co-Founder of the National Vaccine Information Center.

Jim Schneider noted that according to a Freedom of Information Act request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by the group Judicial Watch, 26 new deaths related to the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine called Gardasil were reported between September 1st of 2010 and September 15th of 2011.

According to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control about vaccinating 11 and 12 year old boys with Gardasil, the panel is also advising that this process begin with boys as young as 9 years old.

Barbara has concerns about the study that was used to develop a universal use recommendation as well as the fact that HPV is normally cleared within 2 years of infection by more than 90% of people who get it. Only a small number of individuals go on to have a chronic infection.

In the end, the idea of mandating Gardasil vaccines appears to undercut an abstinence message because young people may think if they get the vaccine, they won’t get any sexually transmitted diseases. This is a dangerous conclusion because the Gardasil vaccine only protects against 4 different strains of HPV.
