I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about communism.
Not every nation that goes down the road of socialism becomes communist. Some countries dabble in socialism but then actually do a U-turn. Take Great Britain, for example, which voted the socialist Labour Party into power in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
As economist Thomas Gordon records, “British socialists … nationalized coal, electricity, steel, and the railways and set up the National Health Service to provide government-run health care … After a number of years, the British economy performed poorly under socialism, and the British people elected politicians who believed in free enterprise and turned things around…Britain pulled back from the brink when they saw that the socialist promise led to everyone being worse off.”
Proverbs 22:3 says, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it” (ESV). America would be wise to learn from Britain’s failed socialist experiment.
