LIFE ISSUES: Alcoholism (Part 5)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about alcoholism.

A common misconception is that alcohol is relatively harmless.

Yet, according to Dr. David Nutt, former UK government chief drugs advisor, alcohol has the same kind of effect on the brain as drugs. He said, “The only difference between alcohol and any other drugs … is that alcohol is legal … and when you look at how [alcohol] affects the neurotransmitters of the brain … it’s clear it’s pretty close in its brain effects to quite a few other drugs.”

Like drugs, alcohol alters the brain, causing people to lose control of their senses.

Proverbs 23:33-34 describes alcohol’s mental effects, saying, “Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast” (ESV).

Alcohol quickly takes control of people’s minds, and believers should beware.

But how does alcohol compare to drugs? We’ll discuss that another time.
