Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!
To answer if it’s okay for a Christian to drink alcohol, we have to turn to God’s Word. There are verses that seem to condemn the usage of alcohol, and there are other verses that tell us to, “drink your wine with a merry heart.”
Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine, and Paul told Timothy to, “use a little wine for the sake of your stomach …”
However, Paul is ALSO the one who commands that we, “not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” It’s okay to have a drink, but it’s forbidden to get drunk in the process.
A lot of Christians simply understand it like this: SINCE alcohol CAN have the power to get them drunk, their personal conviction is “Why chance that?” and just not partake of it at all.
Should a Christian just avoid drugs altogether? We’ll dive into that next time.
