Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!
Today, we’re talking about Jesus’ claim to divinity. According to a recent poll by Lifeway Research, 52% of Americans believe Jesus was a “good teacher” but not divine. Believe it or not, the same survey found 30% of evangelical Christians believe the same thing!
In John 10:30, however, Jesus clearly claimed divinity when He said, “I and my Father” (as in God the Father) “are one.” Jesus also claimed to be eternally existent when in John 8:58 He said, “Before Abraham was, I AM.” The fact that after both of these instances the Pharisees picked up rocks to stone Him is a pretty good indication that Jesus was claiming to be God.
As Charles Spurgeon said:
Whatever God is, Christ is. The very likeness of God, the very Godhead of Godhead, the very Deity of Deity, is in Christ Jesus.
There’s another reason Jesus shouldn’t be called just a “good teacher.” We’ll discuss that at another time.
