So … what happened to turn our supposed evolutionary ancestor Lucy’s chimpanzee-shaped hips into human-shaped hips? On June 3, 1997, PBS aired “In Search of Human Origins.” This two-part series was written and narrated by Don Johanson, the paleoanthropologist who discovered Lucy. Over 100 million people have seen this program.

Superficially, her hip resembled a chimpanzee’s, which meant that Lucy couldn’t possibly have walked like a modern human.

How did they fix this? If I didn’t have the video, NO ONE would believe what happened next. They make casts of the bones, and then use a grinder to take out the parts that didn’t fit! After it was reconstructed (can you believe it), it’s shaped like a human. I would hope so!
